Bridging the gap.
The Säger Bridge crosses the Dornbirner Ache, making it one of Dornbirn's most important transport links. The bridge is regarded as a gateway to the city centre and is highly frequented by local public transport, cyclists, and pedestrians. The bridge borders directly on the campus of the University of Applied Sciences in the northeast and on the hospital in the southwest.
The bridge was deliberately designed to invite passers-by to linger. The diverse functions that the bridge was to fulfil and the specifications regarding materials posed a major challenge. Wooden backrests along the railing serve as waiting benches, while niches have been created to allow people to retreat from busy areas.
The concept for the materials used for the bridge substructure was consistently refined and applied to the entire structure. All the components, such as the bus stop shelter, the border of the edge beam, and the parapets were to be made of high-grade exposed concrete. With this project, the internal joint venture comprising PORR, Nägele Hoch- und Tiefbau and TEERAG-ASDAG fulfilled a number of high architectural requirements regarding surface quality, aggregates, curves, cantilevers and lighting effects.
The enormous width of 37.5m along a length of only 32.5m meant that the carriageway could be extended to two lanes in either direction, facilitating the flow of traffic. In addition, the bus lines all converge at a new bus terminal, which means that six bus stops in the project area can be merged into two bus stops. In order to maintain the traffic route over the course of the entire construction period, the bridge was built in two sections. The order volume for this challenging project was around EUR 3.5m.
Nicht nur das architektonisch spannend gestaltete Buswartehaus, sondern auch weitere Bauteile wie der Randbalkenabschluss und die Brüstungen wurden in einer hohen Sichtbetonklasse ausgeführt.© SimonEgle.se
